Bring it on Google!

Well, I’ve been working very hard over the break and I have a search engine to show for it. There is a very small set of pages that it searches right now, but just wait, it will get better. Mom, please tell me how the colours are. Everyone else can too, but you guys don’t do colours for a living.

Stanford Update

I’ve taken a bit of a break from all the Info Sessions and cool swag lately. Instead, I’ve been keeping busy writing a compiler and a very cool program to help organize multiple tabs/windows. Having a few days off has also helped me to catch up on sleep, video games, and of course school :p Happy (American) Thanksgiving!

I noticed on Google weather that Calgary’s weather was actually warmer than Stanford’s today! How ridiculous is that? I thought I was the one living with the palm trees.

I’m still keeping busy biking, unicycling, and juggling (at least two times a week). I’ve been working on passing, 5 balls, and a few other tricks! Some of these guys are incredibly talented jugglers so they’re teaching me a lot.

Check out all the cool swag I’ve accumulated. I feel like I’m product advertising! The Google pin actually lights up! (I only need 3 more pieces of flair).

Stanford Update

Sorry for the slow posting, email me to remind me to post if you are dying to hear. 🙂

So, what is new… I met the Dalai Lama! He is the first religious leader that I actually have respect for. He admitted that religion must embrace science as it goes on and is just a moral teaching. Things that people believed in the past have been proven wrong and you just move on, you don’t fight vehimently about “god creating the world in 7 days” or whatever. (I know that is christian but I don’t know about the buddist story). He said that values don’t come from religion, they come from you, religion is just a way of codifying your feelings if you want. He has as much respect for atheists as christians as muslims as anyone. It is not their religion that makes them, it is their personality and values. Just an amazing man, very kind and nice. He said that if he wasn’t the Dalai Lama, he would have been an engineer, so I was proud 🙂

What else, not much to report on.. My project for data mining will beat google 🙂 Just watch out Larry and Sergey, here I come.

Linux boot problem

Linux problem.

I hope this makes it onto a search engine. If your windows install halts / freezes after the initial “Checking System Configuration” or “System is inspecting your computer’s hardware configuration” message, it is because Windows XP can’t install if lilo is on the MBR. I have no idea why, but it can’t. So I repeat, if you have lilo instaled, and the windows install freezes, you must remove lilo.

Do so like this

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda bs=512 count=1

I hope this helps someone. It tooke me quite a while to find this.
